After We're Gone

We grew up on loading screens Prayed to search bars Glowing blue Learned our grief from movie scenes Skipped the credits Like we do All our photos in the cloud All our grand plans in a thread Typing bravely Talking loud Silent when we crawl to bed What if the afterlife Looks like an endless scroll All of our half-sent texts Floating Never grow old What if the final door Opens on one last feed And all that survives of us Is what we thought we’d delete We made futures out of memes Shared our panic Called it jokes Burned out chasing vanished dreams In apartments filled with smoke Will they measure what we were By our playlists and our trends Or the nights we sat on floors Holding strangers like old friends What if the afterlife Feels like a late-night call Screen goes dark Your name stays lit But you don’t speak at all What if the final word Is just a blinking light And all that remains of us Is one last “are you alright?” If there’s a room past all this I hope it’s small and warm No more hustling for a like No more weather apps for storms Just your head against my chest Nothing left to prove or spend If there’s a then If there’s a there Let us be softer in the end What if the afterlife Is just another chance To say the things we saved To touch a trembling hand What if the final truth Cuts through the background noise That love was the only thing We ever really owned My friend (yeah, in the end)
