SAGANE

I lit my fire — and the earth glowed all around Like the sky had fallen into the palms of my hands The silence whispers the name I was so afraid to forget Shagane, you must hear this You must know The flame burst out suddenly — spread like a wide wave Everything that felt foreign now suddenly feels like mine The wind pulls the words, carries them into the night I’m ready to tell you the field, the wavy rye under the moon Not as a fairy tale, not as a poem — but as a vow I hold in my chest Shagane, you’re mine, Shagane! Let the whole world dissolve in the fire I’m from the north, made of wind and ice But tonight only this star is burning bright Wavy rye and the moon over the fields That’s all I give you, between us, for keeps Because I’m from the north — the dawns come late there Words are heavier there, and feelings are like stones, real and deep I won’t shout, I won’t call with loud names I’ll just sit by the fire and tell you everything I remember About roads that have worn away, about dreams that never came true And how, without you, this light would’ve gone out long ago Fire doesn’t warm — it remembers Flame doesn’t shine — it swears If the world disappears, let the field remain The rye, the moon, and your voice right beside me Shagane, you’re mine, Shagane! Let the whole world dissolve in the fire I’m from the north, made of wind and ice But tonight only this star is burning bright Wavy rye and the moon over the fields That’s all I give you, between us, for keeps The flame will quiet down... but the name will stay Shagane Between us — the field And the moon
